Digital X-Rays
Digital X-rays are very safe and use up to 80 percent less radiation than traditional film X-rays.
To put this in perspective, a routine set of digital bitewing X-rays exposes a patient to approximately 0.005 millisieverts of radiation. This is roughly the same amount of background radiation a person receives from the sun during a short cross-country flight. The sensors used in our office are highly sensitive, requiring only a fraction of the energy needed for older dental technology.
We have served the South Shore for 60 years. In that time, we have seen dental technology evolve from bulky film to instant digital sensors. We chose this equipment because our Braintree neighbors deserve the highest safety standards available. We live in this community too, and we treat our patients with the same clinical caution we use for our own family members.
If you have questions about radiation, we’re happy to talk about our safety measures and the protective lead aprons we use during your visit.
Benefits of Modern Imaging
Digital imaging provides a level of detail that is physically impossible to achieve with traditional film.
Digital images can be magnified, color-enhanced, and contrast-adjusted on a chairside monitor. This allows us to identify “interproximal decay,” or small cavities between teeth that the human eye cannot detect during a physical exam. It also allows for early detection of bone loss and periapical infections at the root tip.
We believe in being open with you. Rather than just telling you about a cavity, we show you the images on the monitor so you can see what we see. This way, you’re involved in your dental care, not just watching from the sidelines.
Environmental Impact of Dentistry
Digital X-rays are the most environmentally responsible choice for dental diagnostics.
Traditional X-rays required the use of caustic developing chemicals and lead foils, which created hazardous waste. Digital sensors eliminate the need for these chemicals entirely. Furthermore, the absence of physical film means no plastic waste is generated during your diagnostic session.
Preserving the environment in Braintree is a priority for our practice. By removing lead and hazardous developers from our workflow, we ensure that our office remains a clean, green space for the next generation of South Shore patients.
We welcome you to ask about our eco-friendly, modern diagnostics at your next cleaning. You can book your appointment with us at any time.
How often do I need dental X-rays?
For most healthy adults at our Braintree office, we recommend a full set of bitewing X-rays once per year. This specific interval allows us to monitor subtle changes in your bone density and catch decay in its earliest, most treatable stages. If you have a history of frequent cavities or gum disease, we may suggest more frequent imaging to stay ahead of potential issues.
Are X-rays necessary if I don’t feel any pain?
Yes. Most dental issues, like bone loss and infections, don’t hurt until they’re advanced and harder to treat. Digital X-rays help us find these problems early, even when you don’t feel anything.
Can I see the X-rays during my appointment?
Absolutely. Since the results are instant, we go over them with you right away on our high-definition monitors. This quick feedback helps us spot everything from impacted wisdom teeth to early gum disease.
Is it safe to have X-rays while pregnant?
Although digital X-rays use very little radiation, we prefer to be cautious. We suggest waiting until after delivery for routine X-rays, unless there’s a dental emergency. We always use leaded thyroid collars and aprons to keep you safe.
